Cancelation
Fluency Modification › Cancelation
Stop after a stuttering moment, pause, and restart the word more fluently.
Practical Description
Cancelation is a post-stuttering modification technique. When you stutter on a word, you immediately stop, pause briefly (1-2 seconds), and then say the word again using an easier, more relaxed approach. This teaches you that you can correct stuttering and regain control.
Objective
To develop the habit of correcting stuttering moments immediately, reinforcing fluent speech patterns.
How to Practice
- When you stutter on a word, immediately stop speaking
- Pause for 1-2 seconds (take a breath if needed)
- Say the word again using a slow, gentle approach
- Continue with your sentence
- Don't rush or feel embarrassed - the pause is part of the technique
- Practice first on less important words, then on more challenging ones
- Use cancelation consistently to build the habit
