Preparatory Set
Fluency Modification › Preparatory Set
Prepare your speech mechanism before difficult words to prevent blocks from occurring.
Practical Description
Preparatory set is a pre-stuttering modification technique. Before saying a word you expect to stutter on, you pause briefly, set your articulators (tongue, lips, jaw) in the correct position for the first sound, take a breath, and begin with a gentle onset. This preparation prevents the block from happening.
Objective
To prevent stuttering moments before they occur by using proper preparation and gentle speech initiation.
How to Practice

- Before the word, pause briefly (but naturally)
- Position your tongue, lips, or jaw for the first sound
- Take a comfortable breath
- Begin the word gently with easy onset
- Use slightly slower speech on that word
- Continue speaking normally after
- With practice, this becomes quick and natural
