Pull-out
Fluency Modification › Pull-out
When you feel a block starting, gently ease out of it by prolonging the sound and transitioning smoothly.
Practical Description
Pull-out is an in-block modification technique. As soon as you notice tension building during a stutter, you consciously relax and slowly prolong the sound while easing into the next sound. Instead of pushing through the block, you gently "pull out" of it.
Objective
To reduce the severity and duration of stuttering by modifying the moment as it happens.
How to Practice
- Learn to recognize the feeling of tension when a block starts
- As soon as you feel it, consciously relax your speech muscles
- Prolong the sound you're on (e.g., "ssssun" instead of "s-s-sun")
- Keep the prolongation smooth and gentle
- Gradually ease into the next sound
- Continue speaking without stopping
- With practice, the pull-out becomes quicker and smoother
