Voluntary Stuttering
Practice intentionally stuttering to reduce fear and increase control over stuttering moments.
Practical Description
Voluntary stuttering involves intentionally stuttering in low-stakes situations to reduce anxiety and fear around stuttering. By choosing when and where to stutter, you gain a sense of control over your speech. This technique helps desensitize you to the physical sensations of stuttering and reduces the negative emotions associated with it.
Objective
To reduce fear and anxiety about stuttering by gaining conscious control over stuttering moments.
How to Practice
- Start in comfortable, low-pressure situations (e.g., alone, with trusted friend)
- Choose simple words to practice on (e.g., "my", "I", "we")
- Intentionally repeat the first sound 2-3 times (e.g., "m-m-my name")
- Keep the stuttering gentle and relaxed, not forced
- Gradually practice in more challenging situations
- Notice how it feels to stutter on purpose vs. involuntarily
- Celebrate taking control of your stuttering
